What is an insulation resistance test?

In a perfect world, that electricians dream of at the end of the day as they spark out, all the electrical currents sent along a conductive wire would reach their intended destination.

However, the reality is far away from electricians’ dreams. Some of the electrical currents in wires are lost along the way for various reasons. Wires are insulated with a resistant sheathing to contain the electricity of the typical copper or aluminium core. Even with this insulation in place, some of the current still manages to escape.

Just like a leak in a water pipe, flaws in the insulation of a wire allow a steady flow of electricity to escape. This can be detrimental to electrical circuits and machinery. However, insulation testing can help you determine whether the insulation is performing at an effective and safe level.

Routine testing can identify problems keeping you protected from the potential of the result of injury or equipment failure. Insulation is subject to many elements that can cause it to perform at a low level. Excessive heat or cold, moisture, vibration, dirt, oil, and corrosive vapours can all contribute to issues with your wires. For this reason, it’s important to measure insulation resistance.

Testing the integrity of insulation requires measuring its resistance to current flow across it. If there is a high level of resistance, this means that very little current is escaping through the insulation. Conversely, a low level of resistance indicates a significant amount of current may be leaking through and along with the insulation.

Often referred to as IR Test, an insulation resistance test measures the total resistance between any two points separated by electrical insulation. This test helps determine how effective the dielectric (insulation) is in resisting the flow of electrical current.

Insulation resistance tests are useful for checking the quality of insulation. Not only when a product is first manufactured but also over time as the product is used.
